The year was 1979. Jimmy Carter was in the White House. G. William Miller was Treasury Secretary. And Chrysler was in trouble. Supporters of aid argue with passion that the U.S. cannot afford the failure of a company that is the nations tenth largest manufacturer, its biggest builder of military tanks and one of only three major domestic competitors in its supremely important automotive industry Economist John Kenneth Galbraith suggested that taxpayers be accorded an appropriate equity or ownership position for the loan. This is thought a reasonable claim by people who are putting up capital.Congress passed the bill 21 December 1979, but with strings attached. Congress required Chrysler to obtain private financing for $1.5 billion -- the government was co-signing the note, not printing the money -- and to obtain another $2 billion in commitments or concessions [that] can be arranged by Chrysler for the financing of its operations. One of those options, of course, was reduce employees wages; in prior discussions, the union had failed to budge, but the contingent guarantee moved the union.On 7 January 1980, Carter signed the legislation (Public Law 86-185): This is legislation which ... shows in vivid terms that when our Nation does have a genuine pressing economic problem, that my own administration and the Congress can act expeditiously...The loan guarantees will not be made by the Federal Government unless the other contributions or concessions are given to Chrysler by its own owners, stockholders, administrators, employees, dealers, suppliers, foreign and domestic financial institutions, and by State and local governments. Its got to be a package deal, and everyone understands this. And because they have already probed for the best possible interrelationship to form a team to protect Chryslers viability, I believe theres a good chance that this package will be put together. Under the leadership of Lee Iacocca, Chrysler doubled its corporate average miles-per-gallon (CAFE). In 1978, Chrysler introduced the first domestically pr oduced front-wheel drive small cars: the Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon.In 1983, Chrysler paid off the loans that had been guaranteed by US taxpayers. The Treasury was also $350 million richer.

The Tragical History Of Doctor Faustus - 1163 Words

In Marlowe’s play, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, Christianity is painted in a negative light. This reflects the disillusionment with religion that Marlowe and other Renaissance men had as a consequence of the conflict between Catholicism and Protestantism that occurred during the Protestant Reformation. Through Faustus’s lines, Marlowe was able to air some of his less-than-pleasant views about Christianity. Even in the first act, Faustus’s opinion of religion is made clear. â€Å"Philosophy is odious and obscure; both law and physic are for petty wits; divinity is the basest of the three, unpleasant, harsh, contemptible and vile.† Faustus is more than just disillusioned with religion; he is disgusted by it. Marlowe’s low opinion of Christianity comes through in ways other than Faustus’s words; it also shows in the events of the play. Act three scene one is entirely devoted to making fun of the Catholic church. In this scene, Faustus and Mephistopheles wreak havoc on a banquet held by the pope, who seems to care more about his dinner than he does his divine duties. Indeed, almost every line spoken by the supposedly-holy man is about food. He, and by extension organized religion as a whole, is painted as greedy and gluttonous: two deadly sins. This makes Marlowe’s opinion of the catholic church quite clear. As the scene goes on, a group of priests begins a holy dirge in attempt to oust the pesky spirits disturbing the banquet. â€Å"Cursed be he that stole away his Holiness’ meat from the table†¦ cursed be he that took away his holiness’ wine.† This ritual, as opposed to being solemn and holy, seems petty and secular. Furthermore, it reinforces the pope’s gluttony. After the dirge is completed, Faustus and Mephistopheles chase the priests offstage, beating them and throwing fireworks. The prayers of these holy men are shown to be utterly ineffectual, and the friars themselves are made out to be clowns on the receiving end of slapstick comedy. This leads to several problems in and of itself: lack of respect from the remaining employees, lack of proper and appropriate communication, inability of upper management to do little more than put out the latest fire and a further increase in the turnover rate. Procedures regarding key communications (and the manner in which it is communicated) and processes should be in place that apply to all management positions (again, the Human Resources department would be responsible) and managers held accountable for performing these duties. After a certain number of warnings for noncompliance, the manager can be then demoted, or, if necessary, fired. According to Small Business Transitions, â€Å"Managerial issues such as the poor use of outside advisors, lack of emphasis on quality, an unwillingness to delegate responsibilities, departure of key personnel, and ‘personal’ problems associated with the owner/manager become relatively more important factors that contribute to failure as a business ages.† Milinder Recycling is moving in the right direction by promoting growth but missing the boat on obtaining experienced key personnel to help achieve successful growth.
